Intro to Embroidery and Cross Stitch Workshop with Sasha & Halyna

Join Sasha and Halyna for an afternoon learning the basics of cross stitch and embroidery. Rooted in folk handcraft traditions, this introductory workshop approaches stitching as both skill and practice. Participants will learn a selection of foundational stitches while creating a stitch sampler to take home.

Stitching is a learned skill—precise, practical, and once essential to daily life. For generations, the ability to mend, reinforce, and embellish cloth meant warmth, longevity, and care. These techniques were passed hand to hand, often in shared spaces where people gathered not only to work, but to come together as a community.

Stitching is also a practice: a way of slowing the body, training attention, and entering a shared rhythm. In a culture of speed and disposability, the simple act of pulling thread through cloth becomes an act of remembering—how to repair rather than replace, how to make time with others.

Participants are invited to learn the stitches, yes—but also to step into the older practice of creating together.

All materials are provided, along with tea and an herbal baked good.
Held at Mokosh Ukrainian Weaving Center in New Paltz.
Open to complete beginners.
